Dalglish in disagreement but refuses to directly criticise ref

The Reds lost 1-0 to the Potters on Saturday, with the only goal of the game coming from a contentious penalty award after Jamie Carragher was adjudged to have fouled Jon Walters.

Walters picked himself up to rifle home the spot-kick, and Liverpool were subsequently denied at least one legitimate penalty appeal when Matthew Upson appeared to handle a Luis Suarez cross.

The outcome left Reds boss Dalglish a frustrated figure, and he hinted he may not be able to abide by the Football Association's 'Respect the Referee' campaign much longer if inconsistencies continue.

"No one here wants to see this club suffer. I'm not taking anything away from Stoke City, but I think some of the decisions that were made today were hard to take."
Kenny Dalglish Quotes of the week

"For us, we do feel a bit frustrated about a lot of things that happened that were out of our control," the Scot told Sky Sports.

"In the four games we've played in the league, every single one of them has had a contentious decision and I don't think you'll find we've been of benefit.

"We find it hard to take and we're trying our best to be respectful to the campaign that we have, but if the club's going to suffer in any way, shape or form because I'm being too respectful by not standing up for the football club, then I've got to address that.

"No one here wants to see this club suffer. I'm not taking anything away from Stoke City, but I think some of the decisions that were made today were hard to take."

Despite the club's first defeat of the season, Dalglish was pleased with his side's effort as they bombarded Stoke's goal with wave after wave of attack, but without finding a way through.

"It's disappointing that the lads have nothing to show for it but you cannot fault them for the standard of their performance," he said.

"We were in control of our own destiny apart from actually scoring the goal. We did most things right, but sometimes things that are out of your control dictate games and I think today was one of those.

"Stoke is a difficult place to come and play anyway. They're all very well organised and Tony [Pulis] has them playing for the cause, which is fantastic."

Jamie Carragher has praised Stoke City's

The visitors, who travel to Tottenham for their next encounter, went down 1-0 to the Potters, with Jon Walters scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after being felled by Carragher.

Liverpool threw a barrage of attacks at Stoke's defence, but the home side put in a resilient display in keeping them out, with Ryan Shawcross and Asmir Begovic particularly impressive.

"That's the Premier League and that's football, it's Stoke's day today," said vice-captain Carragher, despite having doubts over the penalty awarded against him.

"We can probably be pleased with the way we've performed but at the end of the day we've come away with nothing.

"They defended great. They do great their keeper and the back four. They've been like that for a long time, especially at home.

"And, being a defender myself, you can only admire how they did it, especially in the second half."

Carragher was reluctant to make a judgement on the accuracy of the penalty decision against him, but certainly feels Liverpool should have had one of their own.

He added: "I'd like to see it again but at the time I thought it was a little bit harsh. It may have been or it may not have been, I'll have to have a look at it.

"One has gone against us and the others haven't gone for us, so we feel a little bit aggrieved.

"It's a disappointing day but if we can play like that at Spurs hopefully we'll get something."

Has been captaining the side in Steven Gerrard's absence

The 33-year-old centre-half slipped up in his last outing for the club, making the error which allowed Bolton to breach Liverpool's defence in an otherwise comfortable 3-1 win.

Liverpool have since signed promising young defender Sebastian Coates, and the club's vice-captain admits he is looking over his shoulder at the next generation queuing up for his place

"Young players at the club say, 'I have to be like Carra in training' because they can see that I put in a shift in every session," Carragher told The Times.

"But why should I rest on my laurels just because I have been in the top flight for so long?

"I am always looking to up my game because I feel that I still have something to prove. Even today some Liverpool fans are asking questions about my age and how long I will last.

"You could call it obsessive, but I have always agonised over my errors. My face hit the floor when the slip-up happened."

Coates

"The club has just signed a new centre-back who will be knocking at the door. There is no room for complacency."

And the former England international is still hurting from the error against the Trotters, despite the fact it had no bearing on the result of the Anfield win.

Carragher added: "You could call it obsessive, but I have always agonised over my errors. My face hit the floor when the slip-up happened."

Meanwhile, Carragher, who turns 34 in January, still has two years remaining on his contract but has hinted that he may call it a day if the club decline the opportunity to extend it.

He said: "My contract is up for renewal in two years, but I would not want to play for any other club.

"Life is not just about money. There are other things, important things that have a different kind of value. Anyone from Liverpool could tell you that."

Dalglish Has worked with Comolli to remodel Liverpool's squad

Since returning to the role as Anfield boss in January, the Scot, along with director of football Damien Comolli, has set about remodelling an underperforming playing staff.

Eighteen squad members have left Liverpool, while millions of pounds have been spent bringing in the likes of Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing among others.

Craig Bellamy and Sebastian Coates were the most recent arrivals, as the signings of the pair were confirmed on transfer deadline day.

Dalglish is delighted with the business to date and, ahead of Saturday's match at Stoke, he said: "I think the quality of the squad we have is better than it was last year.

"It's not a team that wins any trophies, it's a squad and the stronger our squad is, the better chance we have of coping with the problems that come up throughout the season.

"We're happy with the strength of our squad and the business we've done.

"It's not just the transfer window that's been busy for us, there's been a big turnaround in players which has been very important for us."

The Brazil international was sent off at Stoke last season

Kenny Dalglish has guided his club to seven points from their opening three Premier League matches and Luis Suarez has inspired some attractive football.

But the match at the hostile Britannia Stadium, where Liverpool have never won in the league, represents a stern examination of their credentials.

Lucas was sent off in a 2-0 defeat to Stoke last season, which was one of the low points of Roy Hodgson's tenure, and the Brazil international is expecting a gruelling encounter before next weekend's trip to Tottenham.

"We know we have two away games now and it's really important to get points in the away games," he told Liverpool's official website. "It always makes a big difference at the end of the season.

"We have to keep going and try to play well - the same way we have in the first three games. If we do, I am sure we will get points and we'll have another good month.

"We know how difficult it is to play against Stoke, especially on their own ground. They have a physical game and big players, and their set pieces are always really difficult to defend. We have to go there ready to fight, try to play football and win.

"A lot of big clubs go there and can't win, but it will be a very good test for us to see how we cope with this type of team."

If Liverpool are to defeat Stoke, they are likely to have to keep former striker Peter Crouch quiet after his £10million transfer deadline day move from Tottenham.

Cameron Jerome was also signed by Tony Pulis on the final day of August, while Lucas knows Kenwyne Jones represents a threat.

"Crouchy is very good in the air and with the ball at his feet. He can make things happen. And we know Jerome was an important player for Birmingham," said the Liverpool midfielder

"They will probably be very excited playing their first game at the stadium for their fans, so we have to be aware of that."

Henderson was 'on his knees'

Henderson has been handed the captain's armband for England's bid to qualify for the 2013 tournament after struggling to make an impression during this year's competition in Denmark.

He failed to replicate the form which had earned the midfielder a move to Liverpool from Sunderland, and Pearce believes it was due to fatigue.

Arsenal's Jack Wilshere missed the tournament due to injury, but prior to that there had been concerns raised by his club boss Arsene Wenger regarding the potential for burn-out.

Under 21 coach Pearce, whose side thrashed Azerbaijan 6-0 on Thursday, admits Henderson was running on empty by the end of England's involvement at the finals.

Nurture

"He captained the side well,' said Pearce regarding Henderson's performance against Azerbaijan, which included a goal.

"He will be a great talent for the future. But we have to nurture everyone in this squad.

"The one thing that did affect him (in Denmark) was the season. A lot was said about Jack Wilshere and his condition.

"But Jordan Henderson was the one player that we realised at the end of the season was flat.

"He took the move to Liverpool in his stride. But he was physically on his knees come the summer, if I'm being quite honest, and that was the only distraction for him.

"I thought he had a decent tournament but come the last group game he ran out of gas."

Liverpool wanted striker before Roma move

Former Chelsea and Swansea man Borini joined Roma on transfer deadline day on loan from Parma despite only arriving at the Ennio Tardini in the summer.

Borini impressed at Swansea on loan last season helping them win promotion to the Premier League and his form did not go unnoticed.

Liverpool, who signed Craig Bellamy on deadline day, are thought to have expressed an interest in Borini as they looked to bolster their attacking options.

"Parma did well to believe in him when his contract at Chelsea ran out," said Borini's agent Marco De Marchi

"Then Roma invested heavily on him which confirmed that the player has some extraordinary ability, as you can see from his performances for the Italian Under-21 side.

"The player was liked by a lot of other clubs, sides such as Liverpool and Hamburg came after him too."

Coates ready for Reds

The 20-year-old Uruguayan completed his move from Nacional on Tuesday to provide extra competition at centre-half in an undisclosed deal.

Fresh from being crowned Young Player of the Tournament at the Copa America, in which Uruguay were triumphant, Coates arrives with undoubted potential.

Clarke, though, is wary of the demands of the Premier League, which has so often got the better of youngsters making their bow in the English game.

"He's a full international and Uruguay are amongst the top five in the world, so they're a strong international team," Clarke told the club's official website.

"He's a talented youngster and gives us different options at the back. He's ready to play if required, but we've also got many other centre-halves ready to play if required.

"You never really know how a foreign player coming into the English game is going to adapt. Some take a long time to adjust, while others like Luis Suarez come in and settle straight away.

Challenge

"You just keep an eye on it and hope the boy settles quickly, gets to know his team-mates, gets a few chances to play and then you build on it from there.

"It'll be a different challenge for him because the English Premier League is a league that takes a little bit of getting used to, so hopefully we can nurse him along, get him ready and he'll be a valuable addition to the squad.

"We look to sign young players that can improve and we looked at his performances throughout the Copa America when he was named Young Player of the Tournament. It's certainly exciting."

Coates is one of seven summer signings made by Liverpool, and Clarke reckons things are starting to take shape.

"All over the team you can see little partnerships and combinations starting to form," he said.

"We're basically a young team who are still getting to know each other and still working on strengths and weaknesses.

"Hopefully over a period of time we'll improve and the team performances will improve too."

Midfielder excited by move to France

The former Liverpool midfielder completed his move to the French Ligue 1 side on Wednesday after failing to impress with the Reds in his first season.

Having previously turned out for the likes of Schalke, Sevilla and Juventus, the 31-year-old's Anfield nightmare somewhat stemmed the flow of his career.

And, after being frozen out in the opening stages of this season, a move was always on the cards, but Poulsen is anticipating regular pitch-time again.

"Evian have been in the picture for a while and I have talked to them back and forth," Poulsen told Danish broadcasters TV2.dk.

"I look forward to going there to play, it's exciting. I have been there already, it's a beautiful place and I believe my family can be happy there."

Bellamy Has returned to Liverpool four years after his first spell at Anfield

The 32-year-old signed a two-year deal on Wednesday having come to an agreement over the final 12 months of his contract with Manchester City, where he had fallen out of favour with manager Roberto Mancini.

He returns to the Merseysiders four years after leaving following just one season under Rafael Benitez in which he scored nine goals.

Great signing

"It's a great signing. As a kid he always said he was a Liverpool fan," said Reds vice-captain Carragher.

"I think he was quite disappointed with how it finished, with how he left.

"He'd have liked to have done a lot better and hopefully this gives him the chance to do that.

"For the last few years at Man City he has been excellent, not just as a striker but as a wide player. In the squad we've probably only got Stewart Downing as an out-and-out wide player.

"I think Craig prefers to play as a striker but he could certainly do that job for us."

Carragher was also pleased to see the defence reinforced with the arrival of 6ft 6in Uruguay centre-back Sebastian Coates, who impressed during this summer's Copa America.

"I haven't seen a lot of him but I think he got young player of the tournament," the veteran centre-back told Liverpool's official website.

"That shows he's got great quality and I think it's going to be a great addition to the squad.

"You can't think of yourself, you have to think of the club. One centre-back (Sotirios Krygiakos) went so we needed another.

Fantastic

"Time will tell how good the lad is but his pedigree looks fantastic.

"He's probably been brought up playing a different type of football than I have, a South American style - so maybe I can learn from him as well.

"It's not always about the older players helping the younger - it can work vice-versa. You're always learning from different people."

Wales striker back at Anfield for a second stint

he 32-year-old spent a solitary season at Anfield in the 2006/07 season before moving to West Ham and latterly Manchester City.

Dalglish, however, has sought to bring the firebrand attacker back to the club on a two-year deal to add more variety to his multi-faceted attack.

"For me, the players they've signed this summer, there has been a lot of British which takes me back to when I started watching Liverpool. It looks so familiar to me and to be part of it is such a huge honour."
Craig Bellamy Quotes of the week

And it was a move the Wales international was never going to refuse.

"I've grown up with Kenny Dalglish, now to be signed by him is a massive honour," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"This is an exciting time. When Kenny took over, watching as a fan last season I got the buzz as well and it was great to see Liverpool end the season well.

"For me, the players they've signed this summer, there has been a lot of British which takes me back to when I started watching Liverpool. It looks so familiar to me and to be part of it is such a huge honour."

Like so many other follows of Liverpool, Bellamy grew up watching Dalglish applying his unique playing style and grace to the Liverpool cause.

Memory

It is a memory for him that is still very vivid.

"To every Liverpool fan, Kenny is probably the best player ever to pull on the red shirt so that speaks for itself," he added.

"He was the first player-manager to do the double and just the way he conducted himself really.

"I know we've had bits of success since then but the club hasn't been the same since he left, so to come back in and be a part of this with the players who are here - it's a good time."

Bluebirds launched Bellamy bid

The Wales striker spent last season on loan with the Bluebirds from Manchester City but decided to join another former club, Liverpool, just before the close of the transfer window.

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay revealed the Bluebirds made an approach but is understanding of the 32-year-old's decision to join the Reds.

He said: "You're talking about Liverpool, which is a huge club.

"He's someone I've spoken to three or four times since I've taken the job, in a friendly capacity. Really until Manchester City decided what they were going to do, I think there was nothing I could have done.

"Certainly we looked at something and put a proposition when we found out it was an opportunity that he'd be leaving.

"But our chairman [Dato Chan Tien Ghee] really showed ambition [Wednesday] and we'd made tentative calls but by that point it was so far down the road with Liverpool."

Bellamy Returned to Liverpool on a two-year deal

Bellamy completed a shock return to Anfield on transfer deadline day by signing a two-year deal after leaving Manchester City.

The Welshman, who spent one season at Liverpool in 2006/07 before leaving for West Ham, will help fill the void left by David Ngog's departure to Bolton.

Comolli believes Bellamy will prove a valuable addition to the squad after a busy of summer of transfer activity at Anfield.

"Craig is someone we targeted a long time ago as you can imagine. He's not a discovery for anybody, we know the quality of the player.

"It was a question of timing and once a fee was agreed with Bolton we spoke to Craig straightaway because we knew he had an agreement with Manchester City that he could leave the club.

No-brainer

"Both for Kenny and I it was a no-brainer and Kenny had a long conversation with Craig on Wednesday morning and we organised for him to come here.

"I think everyone knows how good a player he is. He has pace, he's a good finisher, he works hard and the timing of his runs is second to none.

"His work-rate is really good and what we really liked is the fact he is so versatile. He can play wide, he can play up front, he can play off the target man, so he is an ideal complement to the squad we have built during the summer.

Degen Released by Liverpool by mutual consent

With Reds boss Kenny Dalglish having the likes of Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly and youngster John Flanagan to choose from at right-back Degen has been allowed to move on.

Degen spent last season on loan in Germany with Stuttgart and his time at Liverpool was beset by a series of injury problems.

Degen has made a total of 13 appearances during his Liverpool career and his last outing for the Reds was in the Europa League against Atletico Madrid in April 2010.

A statement on the club's official website on Wednesday night read: "Liverpool Football Club have tonight confirmed they have cancelled the registration of Philipp Degen by mutual consent.

"The Swiss defender moved to Anfield from Borussia Dortmund in 2008 and made 13 first-team appearances."

Will bring his pace and desire to the Liverpool attack

The 32-year-old made a sensational return to Anfield on transfer deadline day from Manchester City.

Bellamy played for Liverpool during the 2006-07 season but failed to find his best form and was a victim of Rafa Benitez's infamous rotation policy.

Rare

However, he has found his opportunities at City increasingly rare, while last season he was loaned out to Cardiff and he had not featured in any City squads this season.

Speed, though, hopes the move to Merseyside will provide the Welsh talisman with regular football, which can only be a good thing for the national side.

"It's fantastic," said Speed. "Craig is a quality player, as I have said on many occasions.

Best

"He needs to be playing and I think it's a great move for him. Knowing Kenny Dalglish as I do I am sure he will get the best out of Craig.

"He is a great man and I think Craig will flourish there. It will help him to have his future sorted.

"It's good for us and I am sure having his future sorted will focus his mind on the game tomorrow night."

Lille reject Hazard Reds link

Reports had claimed Liverpool would have first refusal on signing highly-rated Hazard next summer as a sweetner for allowing Cole to make the move to France. Hazard is regarded as one of the best young talents in Europe and has been linked with a host of clubs including Liverpool and Arsenal. Lille general manager Frederic Paquet has dismissed the claims and insists there is no link between Hazard and Cole. Joe Cole's exit from Liverpool could have a knock-on effect at Arsenal with the Reds rumoured to have first option on signing Lille star Eden Hazard. "There is absolutely nothing in that," Pacquet told The Independent. "There is no link between Joe Cole and Eden. There has been no discussion. "We know Eden Hazard is interesting some of the best clubs in Europe, but he is here and part of the project."

Cole admits English snub

The England international moved to the French club on a season-long loan from Liverpool on transfer deadline day. Cole had failed to establish himself as a first-team regular in Kenny Dalglish's side, after being signed by Roy Hodgson from Chelsea in 2010. Aston Villa were believed to have made a late attempt to lure him to Villa Park, with QPR and Tottenham also interested. The 29-year-old confirmed that he had received interest from English clubs before making the move to Lille. "I had offers in England," admitted Cole. "I know Lille play well, they are a club with a great pedigree and it's really exciting to have a chance to play in the Champions League again. Abroad "I've always wanted to play abroad. I'm glad the move has been completed and I'm looking forward to a different challenge. Cole made just nine Premier League starts for the Reds last season, scoring two goals. He said: "I admit it hurt me that it did not work out at Liverpool. I am a winner, and it will stay with me that I didn't have a successful time at the club. "But I can't look back, I have to move on and this is a perfect challenge. "The support I received from everyone at Liverpool was great but things just didn't work out as I hoped."

Bellamy returns to Reds

The Wales captain is understood to have moved back to the Reds on a two-year deal after negotiating his exit from Manchester City. Bellamy, who left Liverpool after one season in 2007 for West Ham, will provide Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish with a back-up option to Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. Earlier on transfer deadline day, the Reds sold David Ngog to Bolton in order to make room in their squad for Bellamy. A statement shortly before Wednesday's 11pm transfer deadline read: "Liverpool have tonight announced that Craig Bellamy has signed a contract with the club." Bellamy will wear the No.39 shirt at Anfield and the deal represents a whirlwind day for the striker after he left training with his country to complete the move. The 32-year-old went on to join City from West Ham in 2009, but he was not a part of Roberto Mancini's plans after the Italian succeeded Mark Hughes.

Kelly set for swift return

The 21-year-old, who missed the end of last season due to a similar fitness problem, was forced off after half-an-hour of last weekend's win over Bolton at Anfield. But first-team coach Steve Clarke is optimistic Kelly will soon be back in action, which could suggest he may return for the trip to Stoke after the international break on 10th September. Clarke told Liverpool's official website: "Martin Kelly came off because he felt a little tightness in his hamstring. "It was obviously disappointing for the player and disappointing for ourselves, but it's looking like a low-grade injury and so he should be back fairly quickly." Meanwhile, Sky Sports sources understand Liverpool are set for talks with Craig Bellamy over the striker's potential return to Anfield before Wednesday's 11pm transfer deadline.

Downing eyes England spot

Young has become a regular fixture in Capello's starting XI over the past year, scoring his first international goals against Denmark in February and Switzerland in June. His form for club and country saw him secure a big-money move to Manchester United this summer, while Downing also moved on from Villa Park, joining Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool in July. Speaking ahead of England's Euro 2012 qualifier in Bulgaria on Friday the former Middlesbrough winger stated his determination to join Young in the England starting line-up. "Ashley's progress does act as an inspiration, and not only for me. We all have to be ready to be called upon by Fabio Capello," said the 27-year-old. "There is competition for places. He [Young] has seen people competing with him for a place in the team and he's grabbing it with both hands which we all have to do when given the chance. "I hope I can go from strength to strength with England. I'm enjoying my football at the minute. I'm playing with a lot of confidence and I am hoping to be involved a lot more. "There are a lot of players here from the top four or five clubs. I think the competition for places is quite strong. "It is good for England, good for the squad. It keeps people on their toes. "It's probably a headache for the manager but I'm sure it's one he would like."
